(CNN Español) – Colombian businessman Alex Saab, the alleged financier of questioned President Nicolas Maduro, appeared on Monday before a federal judge in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, in his first hearing after his extradition from Cape Verde.
Saab, who was dressed in an orange suit, nearly appeared at this initial hearing as he was charged with money laundering and contract overvaluation.
During the hearing, Saab was notified that Henry Bell would be his attorney, appointed by American Justice. Bell requested to meet with his client so that he could discuss the charges he faces.
The judge refused to release Saab on bail and a next hearing was scheduled for November 1.
Saab was delivered to the United States from Cape Verde on Saturday. He was arrested in June 2020 in the African country after an Interpol red notice due to the indictment against him in the United States.
