A shooting near Memphis leaves one person dead and 14 injured

(CNN) – At least one person has been killed and 14 others injured in a shooting at Kruger in Collierville, Tennessee, law enforcement announced Thursday afternoon.

Police Chief Del Lane said the shooter was found dead.

Lane said at a news conference that 12 victims were injured, but city spokeswoman Jennifer Casey updated the total to 14.

A Kroger employee told CNN affiliate WMC that when the shooting began, she thought it was a “balloon explosion.”

Brignitta Dickerson was working at a cash register when she said the shooting started in the deli.

She told WMC that she ran with some of her co-workers to hide, but the shooter came right behind them and started shooting.

“He just kept shooting, shooting, shooting,” Dickerson said. “One of my co-workers was shot in the head, then a customer was shot in the stomach, and then my other client received similar injuries from the asphalt.”

Dickerson, who has worked at Kroger for 32 years, said she was fine, but was a little scared and shivering.

Police responded to a 911 call regarding the shooting of Kruger in Collierville, Tennessee.

At least one patient has been taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, spokeswoman Kimberly Alexander told CNN. However, he did not provide any information on the patient’s condition.

Casey told The Commercial Appeal she did not know the extent of the victims’ injuries.

At about 2:30 p.m. Miami time, the Collierville call center received a 911 call about an active shooter in Kroger, Lane told reporters outside the store. The department’s first patrol arrived four minutes later and other units began flooding the area, according to the police chief.

When the officers entered the store, they found the people who had been shot. Lin said the SWAT team, patrol officers and other members of the command staff moved from hall to hall and room to room, pulling out personnel who were in hiding and helping injured victims.

Many employees were found hiding in refrigerators or locked in offices. “They were doing what they were trained to do: run, hide and fight,” Lynn said.

The police chief said he was part of a team that brought in a Kroger employee from the top of the building.

“At the moment, we still have some active scenes that we are working on. The alleged shooter’s vehicle is in the parking lot and we are waiting for some additional equipment to arrive so we can safely search for that vehicle as well as some belongings,” the chief of police said.

The Memphis police tweeted Who went to the store at 240 New Pehalia Road for help.

This is an evolving story and will be updated.
