Desktop Virtualization

There’s been a lot of focus on server virtualization, and now some of this momentum is headed toward the desktop. Many company executives see the benefits of desktop virtualization (lower energy output, lower maintenance costs, and a lower total cost of ownership) and are taking a closer look.

Below is information on one of the world leaders in the desktop virtualization space, Panologic. Tech Team is a lead distributor for Panologic. The Panologic desktop virtualization unit is about as big as a rubik’s cube and only requires 5 watts of energy, whereas a typical PC requires more than a 100 watts. In addition, its solid-state construction requires much less maintenance and replacement parts of a typical PC.

If you would like to see how a Pano unit works in your infrastructure, we have trials units that are available; please call 858 531 7224 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to arrange set-up. Also, we will have a demo unit at a table at the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum in November. Below are more details on the Pano unit:

San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum November event details: Nov. 17, networking/tables from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Salk Institute, 10010 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, CA 92037. Normal registration is $40 (mention Tech Team newsletter and receive reduced rate of $25)
Contact Karen Winston at 858 964-1346 to register.

Note: included with registration will be a lecture from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. in the main hall, “Technologies for Health Information, Promises and Challenges Beyond the $40 Billion Stimulus,” moderated by Mike Murphy, CEO of Sharp Healthcare for those interested.

A complete desktop virtualization solution

The Pano System includes everything you need to deploy virtual desktops on top of your VMware virtual infrastructure. In one package and for one price you get both our unique award-winning zero client Pano Device and a unified management interface provided by Pano Manager that lets you easily deploy, monitor and control your virtual desktops.

We've included all of the software components, protocols, and interfaces you'll need - all of which can be installed with a single, wizard-based Windows installer in under an hour - making it as easy as possible to purchase, install, and support - whether you're deploying five virtual desktops or 500.

The Pano System includes:

• The Pano Device - a purpose-built desktop virtualization device and contains no CPU, no memory, no operating system, no drivers, no software and no moving parts. The Pano Device connects over an existing IP network to an instance of Microsoft Windows OS virtualized on a datacenter server.

Pano Manager - Pano Logic's centralized web-based service and management interface enables administrators to manage the entire virtual desktop deployment.

• Pano Direct Service (Pano DAS) - A lightweight service residing within each desktop virtual machine links peripherals attached to the Pano Device to the unmodified Windows drivers residing in the virtual machine. This design guarantees that all existing Windows drivers will work without modification.

Integrating with Your VMware Virtual Infrastructure

The Pano System runs on top of a virtual infrastructure provided by the VMware ESX or ESXi hypervisors that virtualize processor, memory, storage and networking resources to multiple desktop virtual machines, providing greater utilization and increased resilience. Enterprises that are already experienced with VMware Infrastructure 3 or vSphere 4 and have an existing deployment of VMware ESX can install the Pano System software onto their existing VMware servers.

Pano Manager also connects to existing directory services like Microsoft Active Directory for user authentication and can optionally integrate with VMware's vCenter Server and View Manager to provide enhanced and highly scalable desktop virtual machine provisioning, management, and connection brokering capabilities.
