By Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger Move For Hunger, a non-profit organization that works with moving companies to pick up unwanted, unopened food during the moving process and deliver it to local food banks, will launch its inaugural food drive this month to benefit Feeding America San Diego. Throughout the month, collection boxes will be conveniently located at the YMCA of San Diego County: Mary's House, 2374 Avenida Del Diable, Escondido, 92029. North County residents and members of the local YMCA chapters are asked to come together to collect and donate unopened, non-perishable food items to distribute to the needy. Collection boxes and delivery of all donations to Feeding America San Diego are courtesy of Bernardo Moving and Storage of San Diego. "In San Diego County alone, more than 600,000 people are living on incomes that put them at risk of hunger each month," says Adam Lowy, executive director of Move For Hunger. "Your help will directly impact thousands of families living right here in San Diego County. Even the smallest donations go a long way." Residents and YMCA members are encouraged to donate all types of non-perishable food items. However, the most needed items are canned meat, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, soup, cereal and non-food items such as toothpaste and deodorant. "Feeding America San Diego is excited to be working with Move For Hunger, the YMCA and Bernardo Moving and Storage for this food drive," said Gary McDonald, president and CEO of Feeding America San Diego. "There is tremendous need for food throughout the county and it would be great for Feeding America San Diego to host more food drives. Unfortunately, the cost of transportation and manpower to pick up the food is very expensive. Partnering with Move For Hunger and their local moving companies will not only help us keep our transportation costs down, but will help us get more food in to the hands that need it most."
