Been stressed lately? Hectic day at the office?  Slow down, relax and unwind at Tango Restaurant and Wine Bar in Escondido. I can’t think of anything better to calm the soul and refresh the spirit than an exquisitely prepared repast accompanied by a plethora of fine wine offerings at Tango.

This upscale, hideaway is sure to satisfy even the most discerning patrons. Located on Grand Avenue (the main place-to-be in Escondido), Tango boasts an extensive wine list, a well versed, courteous, patient wait staff, and a menu of to-die-for dining choices! Rest assured that everything really does look just as tempting on your plate as it does on the website -- and tastes even better.

Dress is casual elegant. When I was there, some customers wore shorts and Hawaiian shirts while some were in slacks and dress shirts, it depends on time of day and day of the week, but everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy their dining experience. The cuisine is California Contemporary (in this case, it means California’s Best). Everything is fresh, colorful, flavorful and very artfully presented.

Tango also has a full bar and offers happy hour specials on both food and drinks (see website). They feature a Monday through Thursday, “3 Course Sunset Menu” from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., which is very reasonably priced.  On Fridays and Saturdays, your meal will be accompanied by live entertainment. If you can’t wait until dinner, do check out their lunch specials Monday – Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., but please note that Tango will be closed on Sundays until Sept. 6.

I was ushered to a table with big, comfy chairs, and my waiter, Mike Evjenth, placed a black linen napkin on my lap while another wait person poured ice water into an elegant glass and yet another waitperson brought fresh, warm rolls and butter. All the while, the most soothing soft jazz was quietly lulling me into a fine dining mood.

The first presentation was a crispy, tender Duck Confit, served with rhubarb jam, strawberries, goat cheese & candied pecans on a bed of baby spinach.  An unusual combination that melded together surprisingly well and made me believe this meal would really astound my mouth. I was right! Along with this course, Mike suggested a perfect S.A. Prum Riesling wine.

Next I tried the Chilean Sea Bass served with bok choy, Asian mushrooms, and red peppers in a soy mirin sauce. The Sea Bass, which is marinated in miso for 24 hours before cooking, was flaky perfection, and the suggested wine pairing was a Vouvret. On my menu, next was the culotte steak in bearnaise sauce served with three types of potatoes.  The steak was tender heaven and the sauce was absolutely scrumptious! For this course, Mike brought out a Colome Malbec. Just the right red wine to compliment steak and potatoes.

By this time my tummy was full, but I had to try a sampling of deserts. There are no words to describe the snickers bar. This is a house creation resembling a snickers bar only much, much better.  A definite must try! The white panacotta is a treat of cream suspended in gelatin that tastes like a fluffy, sweet pudding – very, very rich. Finally I tried the black cherry sorbet and fell in love. My taste buds have extremely fond memories of my experience at Tango Restaurant and Wine Bar.

My hat is off to the culinary genius of chef Brandon Hunsaker. He is truly a chef born and bred! The owner of Tango, Bill Sapp, couldn’t have chosen anyone finer! Do yourself a favor, and be sure to visit Tango Restaurant and Wine Bar as soon as you can.  Don’t be afraid to compliment Brandon as I did, he’ll love it. Thank you, Mike, and all the patient wait-staff for making my evening wonderful!
