The person who coined the phrase “the dog days of summer” certainly knew what he was talking about.
This excessive heat and humidity was with us through most of July this year and shows no sign of retreating.
Perhaps the planet’s temperature is increasing, as some say, perhaps global warming is involved. But how long ago was that “dog days” phrase first spoken?
How many years - decades - or centuries ago? Are weather patterns really changing, or are we simply in a cycle that is repeated every 100 or 500 years and is beyond our memory?
A good question ... for someone else who has much patience and extensive research capabilities.
For now, residents in North County have found a multitude of ways to keep cool. Wet and wild area swimming pools, the glorious beach, chilly theaters and shopping malls, inviting restaurants and pubs.
Some of us are staying home and watching our so-very-cool air conditioners cause our electric meter to wiz around faster and faster, creating one whopper of a bill at month’s end.
In August, two events are planned that promise enough excitement and family fun to perhaps distract us from how hot we truly feel.
On Sunday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Vista Rod Run classic car show will take place on Main Street, in downtown Vista. Custom cars, hot rods, arts and craft vendors and car-related vendors will fill the street with high-octane excitement.
The event is presented annually by the Vista Village Business Association. Live entertainment and opportunity drawings will also be featured.
The San Marcos Chamber’s 2007 Grand Summer Festival & Taste of San Marcos is set for Sunday, Aug. 26. The festival will run throughout the day, along Via Vera Cruz between Grand Avenue and San Marcos Boulevard. This is a day-long festival for the entire family and promises to delight all your senses.
NOTE: With the July issue of the North County Voice, we began to include news about our neighbor, the city of Carlsbad - bringing to five the number of North County cities that we cover editorially and in which we distribute the Voice each month.
We were welcomed by friendly folks everywhere we visited. Many thanks!
