Located in Old California Restaurant Row, San Marcos Brewery & Grill is the perfect destination for all American tasty food. In October 2008, this casual dining establishment will celebrate its 15th year in business.
“When we first started out, it was a pub style,” said Dean Jacobsen, general manager, who joined the business in 1996. “As San Marcos grew into a much larger city, so did we.” The business’ vision was to transform itself into a restaurant that the community could grow into, and it did.
This full service restaurant offers a gamut of tasty meals including a creative kid’s menu and a take-out area for people on the go. Their full microbrewery located on the premises, “offers the freshest and finest in handcrafted beer,” said Jacobsen.
San Marcos Brewery and Grill views its customers as guests who are spending their entertainment dollars here. “They should be entertained with quality service, exceptional food and value,” said Jacobsen. “We want guests to have an overall good experience with us.”
In tandem with managing the restaurant, Jacobsen has been personally involved with the community. “The San Marcos Brewery and Grill is a member of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce,“ and years ago, I served on the Chamber’s Board of Director,” Said Jacobsen.
Playing a role in the community is important for Jacobsen and the San Marcos Brewery and Grill. He is extremely involved with community programs tied into the San Marcos Unified School District.
“We are a business sponsoring a wide assortment of community programs, and this is our way of saying ‘thank you,’” explained Jacobsen.
The San Marcos Brewery and Grill has been involved in the Excellence in Education program; the Adopt a School program, which morphed into Partners in Education; in Pace Promise; and so much more.
The Brewery was a sponsor of the recent Excellence in Education Award Ceremony back in May. “Excellence in Education, sponsored in part by the San Marcos Chamber Education Committee, recognizes students from each school for their efforts, determination and achievements,” explained Jacobsen.
This ceremony also awarded teachers who went above and beyond their curriculum’s call of duty.
In partnership with the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce and the SMUSD, Jacobsen began the Adopt a School program, which is now known as Partners in Education. “Basically, it gets the business community involved with the schools and gives them a vehicle for that involvement,” he said. In other words, a business can help a particular school through volunteering there and/or donating funds. Be it large or small, all help and donations are welcomed, said Jacobsen.
“The PACE Program is a great program, and it deserves recognition for how hard those students have worked toward their college goals,” added Jacobsen. PACE stands for Partners Advancing College Education. This is an academic partnership between Cal State and the San Marcos School District focusing students on college at an early age.
It’s critical for local businesses to reward students for achievements and to support area schools. “The business community really should be thanking our community in this way, particularly when it comes to the education and future of our children,” said
Jacobsen, “because these children will be our community in the future.”
